Georgia Farmers: You Can Finally Drill New Irrigation Wells — Here's What to Know in 2025

What changed in 2025?

Back in 2012, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) restricted new agricultural well drilling in parts of southwest and east-central Georgia to protect groundwater supplies during an extended drought and water dispute with Florida. That restriction lasted 13 years — until now.

As of April 1, 2025, farmers in affected counties can once again apply for new agricultural irrigation permits through the Georgia EPD.

Who's Eligible?

The new permit opportunity applies to landowners, farms, and operations in counties across Georgia’s Lower Flint River Basin and parts of east-central Georgia — including counties like:

• Baker, Mitchell, Colquitt, Calhoun, Early, Lee

• Jefferson, Glascock, Washington, Warren
